Family of trans youth making hearts with their fingers

I am STILL a huge believer in peer support groups. I think one of the best supports for parents, guardians, and families (PGF) of a trans youth are other PGFs of trans youth. PGFs of trans youth have so much lived experience to share with others. They can answer so many questions and support each other. I do encourage everyone to consider trying a few different peer support groups at least a few times. I keep links to all of the groups and online communities I hear about here, so I can send patients to the resources easily. I recommend checking with your local LGBTQ+ non-profit organization for local support groups as well.

So many of families also find a lot of support online, particularly in Discord servers. Local groups often have their own! There are also parent facebook groups and reddit forums. Virtual communities can be found on the same page as support groups.

PGFs can also work through this asynchronous, self-paced program online called Parent Support Program.

I also recommend family counseling for all families not to focus so much on trans related topics but to strengthen healthy and helpful communication styles within the familial unit. Navigating the world as a trans or gender diverse person comes with some unique experiences that having healthy communication around will help. Parents can watch this free presentation on tips for youth navigating the world more safely. Providers can watch it too, but paid QueerCME members have access to CE/CME credit for the hour long webinar.

Another fabulous resource for PFGs are trans coaches! These folx have lived experience and support PFGs in supporting their youth. Check out these coaches:
